Automobile Review: 2015 Toyota Yaris

Compact hatchback looks pretty good and is totally competent, but is being just competent enough?

On the outside, the all-new 2015 Toyota Yaris looks smashing. It looks much more aggressive than information technology used to me and it stands out in its segment. Toyota says the whole thing has been completely redesigned, and on the surface, the Yaris'southward assuming new exterior and dramatically enhanced interior speak volumes.

Nether the shiny new sheetmetal, however, a different story starts to emerge. The i major thing that hinders the Yaris's ability to exist competitive in its class is its 4-speed automatic transmission (a $1,000 selection). This is a dated transmission, and it holds the Yaris back from hit its true potential. Yes, the four-speed will get you where you lot're going, merely it has been phased out by many automakers considering information technology is dated – it's noisy on the highway, information technology's tiresome to react, and information technology's not as fuel efficient as more modernistic transmissions.

For comparing's sake, the all-new Honda Fit comes standard with a half-dozen-speed manual (the Yaris'south transmission has five speeds) and an optional CVT. For this reason alone, the new Fit comes out ahead, simply there are other things that go far easier to recommend over the Yaris. (The Hyundai Emphasis has a half-dozen-speed transmission or a half-dozen-speed automated, and the Chevrolet Sonic has a five or six-speed manual and a six-speed automobile — do you run across where I'm going here?)

The Yaris's engine also lags backside. Although it'due south the same size (a 1.5-litre iv-cylinder) as the Fit, it is rated at 109 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. The Fit rings in at 130 hp and 114 lb.-ft. of torque. While none of the cars in this segment will set your racing career on fire, the Fit feels much more sporty than the Yaris. Under hearty dispatch, the Yaris is noisy and unresponsive.

Although the Yaris'southward new interior looks much better than the 1 it replaces (Toyota finally got rid of the atrocious centre-mounted estimate cluster and the materials are more upscale), it'south still not as nice every bit the Fit'due south. In the Yaris, a light grey insert that screams cheap spans the dashboard, and although information technology's non hard plastic, the colour pick is unfortunate. What Toyota should accept washed is offer a trunk-coloured plastic insert like the Fiat 500 does.

Other than the grey insert, the interior is logical and uncluttered. The dashboard is highlighted by a 6.i-inch touchscreen, a feature that now comes standard on every Yaris. The interface is like shooting fish in a barrel to get used to and is quite user-friendly — it was like shooting fish in a barrel to pair a telephone via Bluetooth and navigate the menus. Once more, it works just fine, just information technology'south far from the all-time infotainment organization in its class.

Ane chief effect I establish with the interior is ergonomics. Finding a comfy seating position was difficult because there was no telescopic steering (information technology comes standard in the Fit). The steering column does tilt up and down, but because information technology couldn't be pulled closer to the driver, I felt my legs were very bunched up because my seat was and then close, only, at the same fourth dimension, the dashboard felt very far abroad, and I had to lean forward to get to the buttons on the nuance. The Yaris's beltline is also quite loftier, so visibility isn't swell, and the dashboard is very tall, so yous can't see the car'south hood, which to me, is quite essential for manoeuvring tight spots in the urban center.

I know it sounds like I'k existence very tough on the Yaris, just it is non at all a bad car. Information technology is completely competent and will piece of work just fine for virtually people. Just is being merely "good enough" adequate when y'all're lagging behind your competition? There are just and so many other cars in this segment that offer more value, and I tin can't assist merely feel Toyota could have tried harder with the Yaris to make it a better competitor.
